2021 Kia Niro EV vs. Nissan LEAF®

Overview

When it comes to electric vehicles, you have more options than ever before. Perhaps you're considering the 2021 Kia Niro EV or the 2021 Nissan LEAF®, and you're not sure which one is right for you. Let's take a closer look at both vehicles, and you'll see why the Niro EV is the better choice.

Engine and Transmission

While the Niro EV and LEAF® are both powered by electric motors, the Niro EV comes with a 64-kWh battery, while the LEAF® features a 40-kWh battery. The Niro EV's larger battery enables its motor to produce 201 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque. The LEAF® can only generate 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Both vehicles feature a one-speed transmission. However, Kia's exclusive Direct Drive technology makes the Niro EV's transmission more responsive. The more powerful engine teams up with the Direct Drive transmission to give the Niro EV zippy acceleration and effortless handling, something you won't experience with the LEAF®.

In addition to delivering livelier performance, the Niro EV's larger battery gives it a greater driving range than the LEAF®. You can go 239 miles in the Niro EV, while the LEAF® only has a 149-mile driving range.

Interior

Inside the Niro EV, you'll find premium cloth and leatherette seating surfaces that pair nicely with high-quality accents to create a warm and inviting accent. However, the LEAF® features a cheaper cloth upholstery and lots of plastic components. While the Niro EV lets you enjoy heated front seats, you won't get this amenity with the LEAF®. Overall, the Niro EV is more comfortable for you and your passengers than the LEAF®.

Exterior

Like its interior, the Niro EV's exterior offers several fixtures you won't find on the LEAF®. These features include daytime running lights, fog lights, and heated side-view mirrors. The Niro EV's 17-inch silver wheels with painted accents are absolutely stunning, especially when you compare them to the LEAF®'s 16-inch steel wheels.

Technology

If you've ever lost your car in a busy parking lot, you know how frustrating it is trying to find your vehicle. With Kia's exclusive UVO Link technology, you can find your Niro EV using your smartphone. You can also remotely start the car and adjust the temperature setting. You can't do any of that with the LEAF®.
